here's a rundown on the story: 2 boys, Edward and Alphonse are the sons of a very famous alchemist. when they were small, thier father left home and never return. the elder, Edward, hates his father for leaving his mom behind all alone. so these two brothers studied alchemy. they were about 9 and 8 yrs old.

so they made their mom happy. one day, their mom got sick and eventually died. Edward got an idea to revive their mom back using alchemy. since the law of conservation states: "You need to sacrifice something of equal value to gain something.". so the bros learn about human transmutation, which is forbidden. finally, after months of learning, the bros had collected all the elements found in a human body to transmute thier mom. they sacrifice a drop of blood from them as a sacrifice to transmute the soul. They thought they can finally see thier mom again, but they were wrong..

the result is not even human, they've create a monster. As the result frm the transmutation, Edward lost his left leg and Alphonse lost his entire body. unable to lose his bro, Edward transmute his bro's soul into an armour thus losing his right arm.

Alphonse, who is now bind with an armor, brought his bro to thier neighbour, who is an AutoMail mechanic, to make an automail limbs for his brother.

eventually, Edward become a Nationally Certified Alchemist at the age of 15, the youngest National Alchemist to receive the title. frm there, the Elric Brothers set on a journey to find the Philosopher Stone so Edward can recover his bro's body while Al can recover his bro's limbs. They given up to revive their mother. They learned their lesson.

That's what the major plot is all about. Overall, FMA is a must watch.
